Recently, the I received the 2010 kitchen style report in my Profiles magazine from the National Kitchen and Bath Assc. Every year they survey members during the last quarter of 2009 to determine shifts and direction in kitchen design. It is always informative and interesting. Here is a summary accompanied with some kitchen eye candy I found on Houzz.
Traditional styling continues to be the most prevalent, with more than three quarters of designers reporting it as most popular.
Almost two thirds of designers sited white and off white as the most used color scheme. Cherry was the most popular wood used for cabinetry but there was no clear trend on the finish. Natural, dark natural, glazed and white painted were used in half of the projects in the last three months of 2009.
Flooring had a clear favorite as did countertops. Wood floors and granite countertops were used by almost ninety percent of the kitchen designers in that last quarter of 2009. Wow! That is a statement. Ceramic and porcelain tile were the most popular backsplash material followed closely by glass tile.
Refrigerator and dishwasher drawers are gaining in popularity as are under counter wine fridges. Gas remains a 2 to 1 fav over electric cooktops but induction is making gains. The majority of faucets are still being done in brushed nickel with polished chrome and oil-rubbed bronze making secondary appearances. I thought it was really interesting that they didn't ask about appliance colors. Based on what I see, stainless is still number one. I hope you find this interesting. What are favorite finishes in the kitchen. Wood floors? Granite counters (are you over them)? etc. I'm joining Paula Grace's Timeless Tuesday party, jump on over to see her great post on Barry Dixon's new fabric line.

Great summary! Do you think White kitchens are here to stay, or will the trend tip back towards wood soon?

I think granite has become the Corian of this millennium, so far. If I were doing my kitchen right now, I would be looking at quartz, recycled glass, and even soap stone before considering granite. That being said, I like my black/dark green granite. It was 2&1/2 years old when we bought the house and I think I will have it for quite some time. I just hope that it doesn't end up looking as dated as some Corian does now.

I think White kitchens are pretty timeless and classic. Personally, I love them. Wood finishes get dated with the stain tone. White or Off White has staying power and never really goes out of style. If I was doing a kitchen for myself right now, as much as I love stone, I would consider an eco friendly option like icestone.

We photograph lots of kitchens. It seems the survey bears out what we are seeing on the ground. As to the refrigerators, we're still mostly seeing either stainless steel or custom ones that match the cabinets.

Great eye candy! I love Houzz. I am a bit surprised by the report. I thought that contemporary designs were also making headway. I seem them so often everywhere. I'm actually moving away from granite myself more to quartz. The movement in granite bugs me a little. I prefer solid countertops with a kick butt backsplash. My backsplash preference ~ glass!! Thanks so much for joining Timeless Tuesday. See you soon ~

Not surprising, everyone loves classics. The whites and off whites are so refreshing it's no wonder they are favorites. Nice article!

Hi,
Re-doing kitchen to include Cream cabinets, gunstock oak flooring, stainless appilances. What color countertop do you recommend. Should I get something med/dk brown quartz or keep it lighter. Thank You.
