I had a reader email with a question on how to arrange her artwork and pictures. She had recently moved (can totally relate) and had a pile of pictures laying on the floor. She was overwhelmed with how to hang them or to even get started.
Solution:
- I begin by laying the arrangement out on the floor. I like to have consistent, not exact, frames on all the pieces.
- I start by putting the biggest piece in the middle.
- I prefer symmetry, so I find frames that are similar in scale and group them.
- If you have architectural pieces to mix in or a sconce, it gives it dimension and character.
- As you put the arrangement together, keep the spacing consistent.
- Once you have it on the floor the way you like it, you can cut the sizes out of paper and attach them to the wall for guidance.

Our designer friend, Gordon, goes into another cosmic plane when he hangs pictures. It a great challenge and pleasure for him. He get giddy with the results. Me too.
I watch; I help him, hand him the tape, the hammer, the nails. He explains it to me as he goes. I think I'm "getting it." Well I am getting it just a little. But he has talent and he's hung 1000's of them. So we call him when it's time to hang.

Terry, that is funny. It is a matter of playing with it. The results are always rewarding but I have to admit, the process for me is a far cry from "pleasure". I love the "I think I'm getting it." It is so true. I love your description of Gordon, it makes me like him without ever have met him.
