Question:
This reader has a 18 x 18 ft living room with a fireplace in the center of the back wall. She is interested in doing matching sofas and is having a hard time with a space plan. She wants to know if matching sofas are a decorating "do" or "don't".
Solution:
Personally, I love symmetry so I would position the sofas facing each other in front of the fireplace. This space plan works particularly well in a sq room. I've illustrated in the rendering below this configuration.

That looks very nice. I'd want to go into that room unless it was fussy and looked delicate, like I could mess it up.
I've been told that all things being equal square rooms are easiest to decorate. Once I was told that I noticed that most of our rooms a square. Not a coincidence, I guess.

Yes symmetry is nice ...as it looks like good discipline in the first look but there could also be variations and smaller areas defined to make the room ineteresting.

It's not so simple to figure out where to put furniture. This is really good advice.
